Split:

The first inhabitant of Split was the Roman emperor Diocletian who started to build his palace in this friendly bay around 293 AD. After his abdication he withdrew to this luxurious palace of about 30 thousand square meters.
The following turbulent centuries made the palace into a town first populated by the citizens of the nearby Salona, fleeing before Avars and Slavs. The town overgrew the walls of the palace and its authorities kept changing – from Croatian kings in 10th century AD, Hungarian and Venetian administration, to French rulers and Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
Such past left its traces combined in the town everyday life. The city, however, went on remaining the centre of this part of the coast till our day. This mixture of historic layers brought some clumsiness and some things done too fast but today all that makes a part of its originality.

Split is the largest Dalmatian city, the second-largest urban centre in Croatia, and the seat of Split-Dalmatia County. The city is located on the shores of the Mediterranean, more specifically on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, spreading over a central peninsula and its surroundings, with its metropolitan area including the many surrounding seaside towns as well. An intraregional transport hub, the city is a link to the numerous surrounding Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula, as well as a popular tourist destination.

Split is also one of the oldest cities in the area, and is traditionally considered just over 1,700 years old, while archaeological research relating to the ancient Greek colony of Aspálathos (6th century BC) establishes the city as being several hundred years older.

The ancient city is named after the Spiny Broom (Calicotome villosa; brnistra or žuka in modern Croatian), a common shrub in the area. The 6th century BC Greek colony of Aspálathos (Aσπάλαθος) or Spálathos (Σπάλαθος), from which the city originates, was named after the common plant. As the city became a Roman possession, the Latin name became “Spalatum”, which in the Middle Ages evolved into “Spalatro” in the Dalmatian language of the city’s Roman population. The South Slavic version became “Split”, while the Venetian italianized version was “Spalato”. During the early 19th century, the name was “Spljet”, and finally “Split” once more.

Klek:

Klek is a small coastal place situated in the beautiful bay at the main road between Split and Dubrovnik. It is located in the district Slivno, in Dubrovnik-Neretva county, right by the border of the Republic of Croatia with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was once a part of the famous Republic of Dubrovnik, and today it has about 200 inhabitants, who are engaged in raising various kinds of fruits and vegetables, fishing and tourism.

In the cutting of Klek, which is densely overgrown with olive trees, mulberry trees and vine, there is a high quadrangular tower from the Venetian time (also known as the Tower Nonković), still preserved as well as a chapel and the rests of the wall from the 17 th and 18 th century. A new church of St Peter and Paul, built in 2004, is also in that place.
There are the ruins of the old city Smrdan above Klek – these are well preserved walls probably from a Venetian fortress, which served for supervising the entrance to the Gulf of Neum. In its desolate inside there is the church of St Mary.
Above the ruins on the steep knoll stands the fortress Gradina from the pre-Roman times as even better belvedere. It is protected by three concentric drystone walls with the view on isthmus Ston, the Pelješac Peninsula, the mouth of the river Neretva and on Narona. Not far from the city of Smrdan there is a big necropolis of standing tomb-stones – these are stony tombstones from the Middle Ages.

Surrounded by centuries-old olive trees, oleanders and other Mediterranean plants, Klek is the ideal destination for a quiet and pleasant stay for groups of people, couples and families. Big pebble beach is stretched throughout the length of the place. The beach is arranged and visitors are offered the posibility of hiring jet-skis, pedal boats, parasols, deck chairs and bikes. Not far from there are the places with beautiful beaches like Duboka, Repić, Radalj and Komarna.
South of Klek is Mornačna, little sandy beach and a small bay with the intact nature and olive-groves.

This village was founded around AD 1040. In the centre of the town the houses are built close to each other. This once was a means of protection from the Neretva pirates.

There are many old churches (such as the St Nicholas church build in 1250) and chapels, including the Arapovo castle, where the chief magistrate of Florence, the gonfalonier Piero Soderini is believed to have stayed, before he left for Florence in 1512.

Six villages are scattered in the surrounding area. The main road in Orašac leads inland to villages of Gromača, Kliševo, Ljubač and others located in the hills. Gromača is known for its cave and traditional ecological tourism.

Ljubač is located in a valley between three hills which forms an astonishing natural amphitheatre. In these villages there are farmers who produce homemade goat cheese and wine. The roads of these villages lead for 25 km through the inland until you end up in Slano.
