Vis island nature and beaches

The island of Vis is a small Croatian pearl hiding in the Adriatic sea as the most distant inhabited island from the mainland of Central Dalmatia. The island is a favorite to many who just wish to enjoy their holiday with relaxation, and Vis, still undiscovered by the big masses of tourists, is a perfect destination. It is located in the open sea and was hence a military zone for years, but after this was finished, the island started to come to life and there were many things to show to the outside world.

The island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage is something that will make you want to stay forever. There is a small archipelago surrounding Vis and it is consisted of a number of smaller islands such as Jabuka, Budikovac, Ravnik, Bisevo, Svetac, Palagruza.  If you were to look to the south east, you would find another small archipelago of the island Lastovo, so beautiful it is nowadays protected as a park of nature.
The two most important settlements to visit on Vis are the harbour Vis, located on the north- east side of the island, and Komiza bay on the west of the islands. The regular daily bus line between them makes it easy to jump from one to another. As an old military base, Vis has a number of fortresses. Some of these are the Perst tower standing in the port, George’s Fortress called Fortica by the locals,Bentich fortress, the  Levaman battery ( or our Lady’s fortress) built by the Austrians and today the Archaeological Museum, Robertson fortress and others.  The town walls are a view to admire, as well as the remains of the town’s streets.

The island’s clear blue sea and preserved nature, gave in to creating some of the most beautiful beaches for you to see, such as Stiniva, Stoncica and Srebena. Stiniva bay is a great example, a small pebble beach closed in by two rocky cliffs, giving it an unusual shape, reachable either with a boat, or walking down the footpath for around twenty minutes, but the view really pays it off, and it was even announced as the most beautiful beach in Europe by the European Best Destination portal. You can take a number of excursions from Vis, and visit some of the caves hiding around Vis. Take a boat and visit the Blue cave on island Bisevo, a watter- logged sea cave with a blue glow, that was once accessible only by diving, but in 1884. An artificial entrance was made, large enough to fit a small boat.  Green cave on the island of Ravnik is a big sea cave that has a hole on top, allowing the light to shine and sparkle green light on the surface of the sea, creating the mesmerizing phenomenom after which the cave got its name.

If you are interesting in other activities, Vis will offer you a truly active holiday with well marked paths rounding the whole island for you to walk on or enjoy the landscape while biking, using a kayak or diving in the depths of the Adriatic sea. You can even enjoy some cricket or paragliding, tennis and basketball so there are many options for you to choose from.
The locals of Vis are deserving for the tradition of fishing and wine growing that has characterized Vis, and Komiza is sometimes even considered as the home of fishing in the Adriatic. To witness this, there is a Fishing Museum in Komiza showing the history of fishing, and Vis is also a proud owner of a special grape, vugava, which creates the most famous authentic white wine to try on the island. This will be a great company to the light and fresh seafood, dishes prepared under peka or other local specialties such as pasticada, giving Vis a good reason for the reputation as a gastronomic island.
